About the United Nations in the Republic of Korea
Established in 1948, the ROK was officially recognized by the UN through General Assembly 195. The UN played a key role in the birth of the ROK. The ROK is home to many national, subregional, and regional offices of the UN agencies and international organizations.
The Republic of Korea has experienced remarkable success in combining rapid economic growth with significant reductions in poverty. Its experience in sustainable development, improving the lives of the people, and transitioning to a dynamic knowledge economy, provides lessons that can benefit many other developing countries.
Founded in 1945, the United Nations (UN) is an international organization made up of 193 Member States. The mission and work of the UN are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter. The UN can take action on the issues confronting humanity in the 21st century.
On 1 January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development officially came into force. With these new Goals that universally apply to all, countries will mobilize efforts to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind by 2030.
